The fight to preserve religious freedom and reproductive access reached a dangerous turning point this week. A leaked draft of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization revealed that conservative justices are poised to strike down Roe v. Wade – the culmination of a decades-long campaign by the Religious Right to effectively strip us of our First Amendment rights and endanger the health and safety of millions of Americans. This week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, we’ll look back at critical conversations we’ve had on the show discussing the intersection of religion, government, and abortion.
The right to essential reproductive care wasn’t always such a polarizing issue. In fact, the campaign against abortion rights was part of a repositioning by the Religious Right a decade after Roe. This week, we’ll revisit conversations featuring Dr. Jonathan Dudley and Patricia Miller with Rev. Welton Gaddy, host of State of Belief, examining their respective expert analyses on how Evangelical and Catholic conservatives came to invent this ancient sacred truth – in modern times.
Longtime Supreme Court-watcher Dahlia Lithwick analyzes both the makeup and the decisions of the high court. Not that long ago, the religious backgrounds of the nominees seemed tasteless to discuss… But now they’ve become an unspoken vetting point for the powerful political religious right. This week, we’ll look back at Dahlia’s prescient conversation with Welton in 2009 on this important dynamic.
We knew this was going to be a major year for the High Court when it comes to preserving the boundaries between religion and government. As we edge closer to the end of the term, it is essential that we remind ourselves about what’s at stake. We’ll look back at last year’s conversation with Rabbi Dr. Jay Michaelson, columnist for New York Magazine, who joined Welton to sound a warning about what he saw as the impending fall of Roe.
