This week, the day that many of us feared arrived. In one fell swoop, the conservative justices attacked the personal safety and religious liberty of millions of Americans by stripping away the constitutional right to an abortion. This is only the latest example of a radical movement determined to impose its religious beliefs on all. This week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, we’ll discuss how religion is creeping into the public sphere in increasingly dangerous ways.
From the Supreme Court upending church-state boundaries to recent footage from the January 6 riot spotlighting religious themes, the interplay between religion and government is front and center in our nation’s capital. As we approach yet another election season, what impact will these dynamics have at the ballot box? Political management expert Greg Lebel will sit down with Rabbi Jack Moline, filling in for State of Belief host Rev. Welton Gaddy, to discuss the electoral implications of eroding religious freedom.
As Pride Month rolls along, folks are demonstrating that LGBTQ+ rights are valued and essential in faith communities across the country. This week, we have the privilege of sitting down with a local faith leader advocating for non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people through our Faith for Pride Initiative. The Rev. Dr. Neil G. Thomas, senior pastor at The Cathedral of Hope in Dallas, will sit down with Jack to explain how his faith inspires his work for equality.
The past years have seen a marked decline in Americans affiliated with religion. While this development isn’t entirely new or surprising, recent surveys indicate that the percentage of Americans who believe in a God has now reached a new low. Lydia Saad, director of U.S. social research for Gallup, will join Jack to give a behind-the-scenes look at the organization’s new numbers.
