The exponential encroachment of Christian nationalism on our nation is undoubtable. To protect our democracy for people of all faiths and none, we need a diverse coalition to speak up in defense of a vision of religious freedom that benefits the many, not the conservative, Christian few. This week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, we’ll speak with some of the advocates and experts at the forefront of this work.
One of the most prolific leaders in the faith-based fight for justice, Sister Simone Campbell, the original “Nun on the Bus” and former head of the NETWORK Catholic Social Justice Lobby, has long resisted the playful label of “rockstar.” But she remains in the spotlight nonetheless, this week receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Joe Biden. Sister Simone will join Rev. Dr. Katharine Henderson, filling in for State of Belief host Rev. Welton Gaddy, for one of her first interviews since receiving this honor.
The New York Times headline couldn’t be more stark: Christian Nationalists are Excited About What Comes Next. From recent Supreme Court decisions to the firestorm of radical, anti-LGBTQ+ laws in states across the country, an inclusive vision of religious freedom is in grave danger. Katherine Stewart, a leading expert on this movement and author of the much-needed New York Times piece, will sit down with Katharine to explain what comes next.
Credible faith-oriented voices are saying it clearly: reproductive freedom is religious freedom. And we’re not the only faithful voices making that argument. You’ll hear Rev. Angela Tyler-Williams, co-director of the Spiritual Alliance of Communities for Reproductive Dignity – SACReD – in conversation with Katharine about both policy and community solutions following the devastating Dobbs decision last month.
