An editorial published in yesterday’s Times correctly points out President Obama’s lack of action on the issue of religious discrimination and the faith-based initiative. Obama has yet to reverse the controversial Bush – era policy which permits religious organizations receiving federal funding to hire and fire on the basis of a candidate’s religion. It’s a practice that clearly violates anti-discrimination laws and, while campaigning, Obama promised to address this issue. As of now, he has not. The New York Times hits the nail on the head with this statement: “Effective social service programs should not be ineligible for federal dollars just because they have a religious affiliation. But they should be required to abide by the same anti-discrimination laws as everyone else. Public money should not be used to pay for discrimination.” Well said.
