On Tuesday, June 21st, GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump met with some 1000 leaders of the powerful American religious right. In the aftermath, some said that the event had guaranteed his ultimate election; others declared the Christian right officially dead. James Dobson, the influential founder of the far-right group Focus on the Family went so far as to sanctify Trump as a “baby Christian.” Huh?
We asked journalist Sarah Posner what she found most noteworthy about the meeting (audio of which was immediately leaked to the press) and about the chances that the religious right will ultimately coalesce around this unlikeliest of candidates.
