[David Lane] is out to criminalize abortion; the advance of LGBT equality is another thing that he sees as an abomination and against God’s law… [and] this notion of pushing religion back into the public schools; pushing this notion of a Christian culture, and re-establishing, in his words, a Christian culture. – Peter Montgomery

In July 2013, “Christian-Nation” activist David Lane convened an event called “Rediscovering God in America” in Iowa. As a far, far-right Evangelical organizer who claims to have worked with 10,000 conservative pastors to encourage political activism in the religious sphere, Lane is, terrifyingly, far from a fringe figure: although he advocates “war” within the GOP to bring Republicans in line with his Christianist convictions, “Rediscovering God in America” merited the attendance of White House aspirants Sens. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, among others.

During the dog days of summer, politics is the furthest thing from the minds of most normal Americans – and, apparently, most journalists. That’s why the work of Peter Montgomery, Senior Fellow at People for the American Way, on covering this event and its significance is so crucial. You can – and should – read Peter’s reports here.
