In 2008, a handful of American pastors stepped into their pulpits one Sunday and preached in favor of a particular presidential candidate, deliberately violating the Johnson Amendment – part of U.S. Tax Code dating back to 1954 limiting political campaigning by tax-exempt organizations. Now it’s become an annual event – and working to educate both pastors and congregants about the dangers of this attempt to counter a “religious freedom” straw man is Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. Executive Director Barry Lynn joins Welton to talk about this year’s “Pulpit Freedom Sunday” on October 7 and how his organization is responding.
